Alcohol container found at scene of San Augustine County wreck
SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) – Alcohol containers were found in the car D.P.S. believe to have caused the five fatality wreck in San Augustine County Saturday night.
"We do believe that alcohol will be involved due to the beverages in the front of the car," said Investigating D.P.S. Trooper Brent Murray.
It just minutes before 9 PM Saturday night, when San Augustine resident Patrick Jackson came upon a horrific scene on Farm-to-Market Road 2213.
"I got to the bridge. It was just a bunch of smashed cars in the road. And I was like 'man, what's going on?" said Jackson.
Jackson was the first person to drive up on a two vehicle wreck.
"And I stopped and I was like is everybody ok? Anybody ok? Everybody ok? And nobody said nothing," said Jackson.
He got back in his car and called 9-1-1, and waited for law enforcement to arrive. Jackson said he felt helpless.
"I just so happened to look and I seen a guy kind of wedged between the car and the ground and I was like man, I don't think nobody here done made it," said Jackson.
The collision occurred on a small bridge, about a half mile south of the San Augustine city limits.
According to the D.P.S. report, Charles "Mosey" Thomas, 53, of San Augustine was driving a 1997 Saturn four-door sedan southbound on f.m. 2213 when he crossed over the center stripe. The Saturn hit a 1997 Ford Astrovan head-on.
Weyman Hall, 65, also of San Augustine was driving the van. Both drivers, and the three young men riding in the Saturn died at the scene.
The passengers in the Saturn were Justin Wiggins, 13, of San Augustine; Charles "Little Wayne" Amburn, 26, also of San Augustine; and Jack Fountain, 23, of Center.
"This is going to be my worst," said B.J. Thomas, Owner of Thomas Wrecking Service.
Thomas has been in the towing business for more than 25 years, and can't remember working a wreck more tragic.
"It is going to affect the community really bad," said Thomas.
However, he said, their community always comes together in times like these.
"San Augustine, believe it or not, it's a small town, but everybody pretty much feels for everybody," said Thomas.
Jackson agreed, but also hopes this tragedy can be a wake-up call.
"Everybody really need to be patching up their life because one day you're here and the next day you're gone," said Jackson.
All five victims were pronounced dead at the scene at 9:15 PM Saturday by San Augustine County, Precinct 1, Justice of the Peace Ponder.
Investigators want to know why "Mosey" Thomas was driving a car that didn't belong to him, and where was the group heading that night.
Trooper Murray with DPS said the usual practice is to wait until after the victims' funerals to interview family members. So answers to those questions could be a week away.
"We'll find out their destination and maybe where they were coming from. Their mental state, whether they were having family problems..." said Murray.
As long as a month may go by until toxicology reports return blood alcohol levels of the victims.
